This camera has an 8.0-megapixel 1/2.5-inch CCD and has an f/2.6-5.5, 4x zoom lens with a focal length range equivalent to 35-140mm equipped with a 2.5-inch 115k monitor and an optical viewfinder.
It has a range of manual exposure controls and a useful selection of image customization options and sensitivity settings from 80 to 1600 ISO. As for physical specifications, the model operates at 32-104°F/0-40°C temperature and 10-90% humidity. The model weighs 175g and comes in dimension 3.71 x 2.55 x 1.61 inches. Its exposure compensation ranges from -2 EV to +2 EV in increments of 1/3 EV. The aperture is f/2.6 – 5.5f/2.6 – 5.5 and shutter speed is 15 – 1/2000 sec. The shutter speed is settable in Tv and M. The camera uses TTL Autofocus and Manual focus and its shooting standby is available in movie mode. Flash mode is auto with red-eye correction availability. The continuous burst capture of images is 1.4fps and voice memo up to 60 second can be attached to images. This camera has a built-in microphone and speaker and is powered by two standard AA type batteries. It supports SD/SDHC, MMC/MMC+, and HC MMC+ memory cards.
The metering system of the model is spot metering which is center-weighted average. Metering frame is fixed to the center. It is used when controlling facial brightness in Face Detection AF.
The camera offers users the option of 19 shooting modes, from fully automatic to fully manual operation for control.
This DIGIC III image processor helps performance levels of the camera including start up, auto focus and shutter response times. Image quality, power consumption of camera and battery life under typical shooting conditions is different.
The camera’s zoom range can be expanded even further with the use of any one of three optional converter lenses: a 1.75X tele-converter, a 0.7X wide converter and a 52mm close-up lens for frame-filling macro photography. The converter lenses attach over the camera’s zoom lens by means of an optional conversion lens adapter.
The camera features Photo Effects with its My Colors with Vivid, Neutral, Sepia, Black & White, Custom color and has erase modes specific for a single image and also all images. Its self-timer activates shutter after an approximation of 2-sec. /10-sec. delay. Shooting modes such as auto, easy, P, Av, Tv, M, portrait, landscape with special scene: foliage, snow, beach, sunset, fireworks, night scene, aquarium, indoor, kids and pets as well as night snapshot are the types of shooting modes available.
The A590 IS camera also features Canon’s Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) feature. OIS reduces the effects of camera shake and the blurry pictures by allowing the lens to shift to compensate for camera movement or shake. Canon’s Optical “lens shift” system help maintain the quality of the stabilized image without covering up parts of the image. This OIS technology is used when the movement being stabilized is caused by extended telephoto or low-light shooting conditions.
On the other hand, Canon’s Motion Detection technology consolidates motion information for both the camera and the photographic subject and determines whether the subject has moved. It also determines the necessary adjustments to focus or exposure needs to be made. It will even detect and assess subject movement between each frame when capturing a series of images. Additionally, when paired with this system, the motion detection system’s onboard vibration-detecting gyro senses and compensates for movement due to camera shake at all situations including when the camera remain stills.
Canon’s Face Detection Technology detects, tracks, focuses and improves exposure up to nine forward looking human faces in the frame or can lock onto a specific face in the crowd. Normally, all or one are in focus and properly exposed, with or without flash. While the Face Detection algorithm prioritizes up to nine human faces in a scene, it can also be instructed via the Face Select and Track function to lock on to a single face in the crowd. The chosen countenance must be focused, no matter where it appears in the frame. Besides, focus and exposure control, this camera uses the Face Detection Technology to improve on white balance for purpose of color accuracy.
